Apologies, my reply was to Diliwar.

"ignorant and uncivilized whites of an earlier American era"

If ownership of slaves makes your ancestors "ignorant and uncivilized", well, mirror, meet Diliwar, Diliwar, meet mirror.

Mr Bernard, what a pleasure to read your blog's posting on your close encounter. You added a precious perspective, and a much needed note of sanity to the wildly insane & fear-induced hysteria that is currently infecting segments of our public. Thank you for lending your clear, sane voice.

Aman & Bassam: God bless you for making a truly inspired idea into an inspiring reality; and sharing it with all of us. Please consider extending your 30 States to 50. It would be awesome to sample the other Muslim communities in the rest of the 20 states too!

Like many of the other readers, I'm addicted to your blog. May God reward you both with the best for your efforts & sacrifices.

Wow, even I as a Muslim did not know that there were so many condemnations made by Muslims. Thanks for the information, I will use it, learn from it and pass it on. Thanks

I implied no condemnation. As I pointed out, such things are in the histories of all peoples, mine included - both as slaves and owners of slaves.

As Dave points out, a quick review of history will quickly show that several Muslim north African groups were heavily involved in the slave trade. Many point specifically to the Hausa, and no, sub-tribes are not specified. You take offense where none is offered. If you are from a people who have never abused another, then good for you. I am not.

ASA, the Sheikh was making more of a statement on the Aqeeda of the other Muslims in the city than about the population of people who called themselves "Muslims" at the time. The oldest mosque in Milwaukee is Masjid Sultan Muhammad. The omission by others is a slap in the face to pioneers who went to jail so people could say As Salaam Alaikum!

JAK for the post and pictures. I'm a US Muslim history buff and had read about the mosque, but did not know it had been rebuilt. I really appreciated the pictures and info about Lila and her family--it was amazing. I wish we could know more about them and know what *exactly* happened in 1970, such an important part of US Muslim History. khair

I know all the Omar siblings and knew their wonderful
mother (I called her my adopted Mother). I wanted to
be at the dedication of the Mosque, but was unable to. Thanks to both of you, I feel like I've been
there. Lila, is indeed, a wonderful woman as are
all the other sisters and the brothers. They are a
very inspirational family to have had as part of my
life. Blessings on both of you and this great
journey you have been on. I am sure many have felt
their lives enriched by your sharings.

Sorry that was a weird comment, i re-read it at that point and was filled with so much emotion i couldn't say anything but that. what i meant to say is that this post is so beautiful because I feel like you were able to capture some notion of the essence of this community by the pictures and small stories of these beautiful people.

they're simply just human, trying to do their best in this country and trying to do their best by their Lord. and somehow you were able to capture that perfectly.

Harun's story hit a nerve for me, his reaction was just so real and so raw because of his terrible experience. its so crazy how we don't have any kind of point of reference for the kind of experiences he must have had but somehow we still know it's real.

These people are beautiful. Of all the masajid you could've went to in cali and socal thank you for going to this masjid and letting us know about this gem of a community. may God bless them, may God bless you guys, may God bless this country.
